Masterclass Evangelism
Evangelism
For many reasons, evangelism is often a spiritual discipline that is somewhat neglected or simply avoided by many Christians. The tension of going out in the social space and having to interact with unknown people makes things even harder. Despite the fact that we all know how beautiful the feet are of those who bring good news, we are often just simply overwhelmed. It is of no surprise then that Jesus says, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few, therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”[1] This masterclass has been developed to overcome the most common issues surrounding evangelism. As such, we seek to share the Gospel with those who are ready to receive and are willing to interact.

What will we do
The masterclass consists of both theory and practise. We will start with a biblical foundation, followed by teaching on ‘God space’, the process of becoming a disciple of Jesus, the strength of a personal testimony, and generational influences. After a short break, we will start with the practical part of the masterclass, since “doing it” often teaches more than just “knowing it”. Participants will look at their own testimony, and we will go out on the streets and start the interactive part. Based on conversation and listening skills, participants will learn to find ‘God space’ and go from there. The masterclass has been set up in a way that, despite the learning curve of participants, everybody will be challenged to take their evangelism to new levels.
Biblical foundations are the start of, what we believe, everything we do as Christians. Most certainly, when it comes to sharing the Gospel. At the end of the masterclass, participants will be able to explain how evangelism is biblically grounded and what its relevance is for today.
God space is a term used for the individual relationship of a person with God. Whether you are a Christian or not, we all have our own space with God. At the end of the masterclass, participants will be able to recognise ‘God space’ in the life of those they interact with.
Becoming a disciple is not the same as converting to Christianity. It is this difference which separates the Masterclass Evangelism from most other teachings or training for evangelism. By the end of the masterclass, participants will be able to distinguish between making converts and making disciples, understand the Engel scale and its relevance and understand the importance of disciple making as opposed to converts.
Generational influences are often unconsidered in Evangelism. They are, however, of utmost importance if we want to reach all generations with the Gospel. Participants will learn the biggest difference between modern and post-modern generations and will be able to determine their conversational approach based on this.
Conversation techniques are not a must, but we all know they do help greatly. Being able to speak a language that resonates with the one we are having a conversation with will help build trust, common ground and most of all a willingness to hear what we have to say. Participants will learn to recognise both positive and negative conversational patterns and will be able to respond adequately.
Learning to listen might be the most important part of the practical teaching. Actively listening to the people we interact with means that we are sincere in our approach. Wanting to know more about the person and their relationship with God gives us their starting position. Participants will be able to listen sincerely to those they interact with and remember important details to determine where to link the Gospel in the life of those they evangelise.
Learning to ask will help to keep the conversation going and will help us understand even more where the other person is coming from. At the end of the masterclass, participants will be able to implement all the information given above and, as such, are able to spread the gospel in such a way that Disciples are being made.
